What is a peel ?

A peel is a technique used in aesthetic medicine to remove part of the skin by "peeling" it. Superficial peels exfoliate only the superficial layers of the epidermis, getting rid of dead cells.

By eliminating surface skin cells, the peel stimulates cell regeneration, resulting in renewed skin. This painless treatment helps reduce minor skin imperfections and revive the radiance of the face, décolleté or neck.

Superficial peeling works by removing the superficial layer of the epidermis, without affecting the deeper, vascularized tissues of the dermis.

What is a fruit acid facial peel ?

A fruit acid facial peel is a superficial skin treatment technique. It generally uses a solution of fruit acids belonging to the AHA chemical group, or alpha-hydroxy acids. These acids are acidic compounds of organic origin, such as glycolic acid (from sugar cane), mandelic acid (from almonds) and maltic acid (from apples).

The aesthetic physician prepares the chemical solution and applies it to the patient's skin, adjusting the application time according to the previously established diagnosis. The fruit acids used in this treatment are not very irritating and do not penetrate deeply, making them well tolerated by the skin.

How does a fruit acid facial peel work ?

The acid radical in fruit acids alters the ionic bond that binds corneocytes (dead epidermal cells) together, thus removing their cohesion and ensuring exfoliation without peeling.

Fruit acids have a mechanical action, exfoliating impurities, homogenizing skin texture and freeing blackheads blocking sebaceous glands.

They also have a biological action. By reducing the thickness of the epidermis, the regenerative base accelerates its renewal through more rapid mitosis, resulting in the arrival of numerous young cells and more supple tissue. This acceleration of the germinative base also boosts the underlying dermis, resulting in concomitant dermal renewal for younger-looking skin.

Some natural compounds, such as ferulic or mandelic acid, also neutralize an enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis (tyrosinase), reducing its secretion and hence sunspots.

Who can have a superficial peel ?

Anyone can undergo a superficial facial peel, regardless of skin type, phototype or age. Even black and mixed-race skins can benefit from peels, provided they use suitable products that won't cause discoloration.

During your initial consultation, the aesthetic doctor will guide you towards the best solution and the most appropriate type of peel for your situation. He or she will be able to guide you towards a gentle, superficial or deep peel, depending on your needs.

Superficial peels are recommended if you want visible results from the first session, without having to take time away from your social and professional life.

Depending on your skin's needs and your goals, several sessions may be necessary. A superficial peel smoothes the skin, reduces imperfections, diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, and brightens the complexion.

Depending on your skin's needs and desired results, several sessions may be required. Superficial peeling is ideal for smoothing the skin, reducing imperfections, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, and brightening the complexion. Before starting treatment, the Clinique des Champs Elysées practitioner will check that there are no contraindications.

Superficial and medium peels offer remarkable results right from the first session, particularly on skin with pronounced wrinkles or pigmentation spots.

How a superficial peel works

The superficial peel is a painless treatment that requires no convalescence period, which means you can have it done between appointments without any problems.

Before proceeding with a superficial facial peel, we recommend that you prepare your skin for 3 weeks. Your aesthetic doctor will advise you on a daily routine to follow at home to exfoliate and cleanse your skin, allowing better absorption of the fruit acids. An active substance will also be used to neutralize melanocyte activity and avoid any risk of hyperpigmentation. It's important to apply the prescribed cream every day before your peeling session, especially if you have black or dark skin.

During your peeling session, your practitioner will begin by cleansing and degreasing your skin before applying the peel using a brush or absorbent cotton soaked in fruit acids. This product can take the form of a gel or a semi-liquid peel. The application time will depend on the desired effect, and your doctor will then neutralize the acidity with a buffer product. After rinsing, your face will be treated with a protective repair product.

Your doctor will advise you on the ideal protocol, including the number of superficial peels required (between 2 and 6) and the interval between each session (between 2 and 4 weeks).

After a superficial facial peel, you may feel a slight warmth and sometimes redness, but your skin will not peel. There will be no oedema or crusting.

Results of the fruit acid facial peel

Discover the incredible results of a fruit acid facial peel! You'll be dazzled by the instant effect, giving your complexion incomparable luminosity, evenness and radiance. No more tired features, your face will look more dynamic than ever!

Although the rejuvenating effects are more gradual and limited compared to an average peel, they intensify with each successive session. If you opt for a TCA peel, a single session is generally sufficient. However, you may experience some flaking and swelling for 2 to 3 days, a sign that TCA acid is working deep down.

You don't need to hide from the world after a superficial peel, but you will need to take care of your skin for a few days. Apply a soothing and repairing cream, as well as daily sun protection of at least SPF30.
